Golf courses of St. Thomas and St. Croix USVI
A must see for enthusiasts, the Mahogany Run Golf Course in St. Thomas attracts golfers around the world with its spectacular scenery and course. This par-70, 6008 yard, 18-hole course challenges you with the infamous “Devil’s Triangle.” This trio, composed of the 13th, 14th, and 15th holes, proves so tricky that anyone who plays all three without a penalty stroke receives a special "I Survived The Devil's Triangle" certificate from the Club's Pro Shop. The 13th consists of a dogleg-left par 4 that overlooks a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean, so lovely that Golf Digest described the hole as "one of the most beautiful settings for a putting green in the game of golf." Playing the hole in regulation requires a 200-yard tee shot followed by a wedge into the 25-foot-wide green. Next, the cliff-side 14th hole features a 173-yard par 3 with the Atlantic Ocean as the fairway. Then, number 15 presents a 560-yard par 5, where accuracy and determination becomes vital. Sloping greens and tricky ponds draws up every bit of your skill.
For a more diverse palette of courses, visit St. Croix. The fees of the public courses dip as low as $20 for 9 holes and $14 for cart rental. Phone for information on when major celebrity tournaments are, for a truly captivating spectacle and maybe a chance to play with the pros. Visit the famous Buccaneer golf course, an 18-hole par 70 designed by Bob Joyce. The 2007 edition of Travel and Leisure Golf considered this course to be "the most scenic layout on St. Croix." 5,668 yards of spectacular ocean view, and 7 out of 10 holes facing the waterfront, lures golfers to St. Croix from all over the world. Senator Edward Kennedy once declared of the signature 3rd hole: “The only problem with this hole is that it's so beautiful, you don't want to leave the green."
Being in close proximity to Christiansted also makes for an easy trip if you live in town. For an even shorter trip, stay at the Buccaneer resort and never be more than a few minutes away from the greens when you get the hankering to play.
Experience a truly spectacular game at the famous Carambola Golf Club in the northwest valley of St. Croix. A "must play" for any golf enthusiast, this Robert Trent Jones Jr. design ranks among one of the best in the Caribbean. At 6230 yards with a par of 72 the Carambola Golf course stands as the longest course in the Virgin Islands. Tee off with the lush tropical greenery and the mountains in the background. Experience the fantastic par 3's, full of water, bunkers, and sloping greens and brace yourself for the par 5 at the 10th hole. This course challenges you for yard after yard at each hole, a true adventure for any golfer!
